Conventional wisdom holds that solar power is for ultra-light solar racing cars. This paperrndescribes how personal transportation battery electric road vehicles can be directly solarrnpowered. It presents data taken from charging and driving work commute trips. Researchrnrelated to present and future costs and the performance of optimized systems is alsornpresented.rnWith the advent and expanding popularity of Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEVs),rnvehicle and battery packs become much more affordable. Perhaps NEVs provide a directionrnfor changing the vehicle mix in the direction of lower energy consumption and lower cost. Inrnaddition, photovoltaic panels are now available at a cost of less than $3.50 per Watt bringingrnintegrated vehicle and solar charging system costs down. The paper presents the results ofrnthree experiments using photovoltaic panels to charge electric vehicles used to commute tornand from work. Using the experimental results the analysis then varies the size of PV arrayrnto meet commute trip range needs, and estimates costs for these systems.rnIn the past, most people have considered solar recharging ineffective and too expensive. Onrnthe contrary, this paper shows how direct solar charging of vehicle batteries can bernaccomplished for longer NEV trips at a cost of $0.46 per mile. Ultra low energy use vehiclesrntraveling more than 15 miles per day might achieve costs of less than $0.35 per mile. Nornnon-renewable resources are used to provide energy for these trips, and the energy source forrnthis transportation form is sustainable.
