When natural gas is stored in aquifers, cushion gas accounts for the largest part of the investment. In orderrnto reduce costs, Gaz de France started inert gas injection in three storage facilities (Saint-Clair in 1979,rnSaint-Illiers in 1989 and Germigny in 1982 and 1993). These operations took place under very differentrnpractical conditions and were designed so that the withdrawn gas could be sent out without any specificrnoperating constraints over several decades. The monitoring of such operations was done using a thoroughrnmeasuring network or/and modelling tools that correctly handle gas mixing phenomena. The updated datarnfor the Saint-Clair and Saint-Illiers cases will be presented in this paper and compared with simulationrnresults for the latter case .
