Terrestrial field dissipation studies are useful for determining the rate of dissipation of parent compounds under actual use conditions, providing information on the simultaneous formation and decline of important metabolites, and providing an indication of leaching potential and accumulation of residues in soil. No significant changes to the basic study design currently used by industry are needed to meet these study objectives. Study modules to examine such processes as leaching, volatilization from soil, metabolism and formation of bound residues, and residues in plants can be added when most of the applied material reaches the soil at application. Soil sampling can also be added to studies with foliar applications, but usually obtaining precise soil dissipation rates should not be an objective of such a study. The results of terrestrial field dissipation studies should be used in environmental risk assessments, and study designs should reflect the use of the experimental results in risk assessments.
