In the absence of load, interactions between glass and PDMS led to elastic deformation with a work of adhesion of 89.0 mJ/m~2. The use of an AFM cantilever to apply an external load on individual particles resulted in shear forces which, in the presence of a positive force, reduced the contact area. Shear forces also assisted in the removal of particles, leading to lower than expected pull-off forces. In practice, the use of an AFM cantilever based technique to determine the normal force required to remove a particle may lead to an underestimate of its magnitude.
