Interphase regions have been designed for carbon fiber reinforced vinyl ester matrix composites with a series of tough, ductile, thermoplastic sizings having similar mechanical properties but systematically varied chemical polarities. These materials interdiffuse with the vinyl ester matrix during cure to varying degress, isolating the interphase microstucture as the changing variable. There is large improvement in durability when the sizing interacts with the resin, as in the case of the CPHE. There is a smaller improvement in fatigue properties when using the PHEA sizing which does not interdiffuse with the resin.
