Java kapok (Ceiba pentandra), when released by explosive dispersal mechanism reaches a distance of 2 - 3km, constituting a nuisance to the environment as the seeds carrying fibres are blown into open areas. The silky fibres that dispersed the seeds were believed to be too brittle and cannot be spun. However, a blend of Java kapok and medium staple Nigerian cotton fibres was successfully spun into a fine count yarn with average twist after blending the two in a cotton/kapok blend ratio of 60/40. An evaluation of the tensile properties of the blend yarn spun on a BD 200 O-E spinning machine and using a 100% cotton yarn as control was made. It was observed that despite having similar twist and yarn number, the blend yarn had relatively lower tensile properties than 100% cotton yarn. Results of the study gave a useful indication of how the 60/40 cotton/kapok blend yarn would behave in use so that more appropriate yarn for a range of apparel and non-apparel end-uses could be predicted.
