Fluidized beds are widely used for the incineration of wastes like municipal solid waste (MSW), hospital waste, sludge, slurry and industrial wastes. Fluidized bed incinerators are usually bubbling or circulating type. Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) incinerators are popular because of the better mixing, high combustion efficiency and in-situ control of acidic emissions. Recirculating Fluidized Bed (RCFB) is an internally circulating fluidized bed that is usually more compact than the conventional CFBs. CFBs and RCFBs can be operated in Fast Fluidized Bed (FFB) regime. In the FFB regime, particles aggregates near the wall of the furnace (the riser), commonly known as clusters, form continuous down-flowing layers known as the annular downflow layers. The present paper describes the cluster formation in the circulating fluidized bed systems and presents a method for the measurement of the annular downflow layer thickness in the riser of a lab scale cold model RCFB. The measurements were done using a high-speed video camera. The variation of annular layer thickness with the axial position along the height of the riser, superficial air velocity and the inventory of solids are discussed.
