In the biochemical conversion route of biomass, pretreatments are indispensable to the efficientrnproduction process of fuels, plastics, chemicals and specialty chemicals. It is a very energy-intensive step. Here, arnmathematical model is developed to evaluate the energy required during the pretreatment of biomass for thernproduction of ethanol. The model was developed using the dilute acid pretreatment process reported by NationalrnRenewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) as the basis for its development. The energy demand of the pretreatmentrnprocess was evaluated by considering thechange of internal energy of the substances and the reaction energyrnconstructed on a number of simplifying assumptions. Sensitivity analyses were performed on the solid loading rate,rntemperature and acid concentration, the results of which showed that the solids loading rate had the most significantrnimpact on the energy demand.
