The paper presents an opportunity for the co-disposal of industrial solid wastes in fly ash brine paste (FABP). A case study conducted at SASOL Synfuels in Secunda indicated that certain solid wastes can be used to ameliorate paste properties to a similar degree as commercial admixtures e.g. cement. An independent study was also carried out to evaluate the impact of surface area on salts remobilisation in FABPs. The role of surface area proved to be insignificant in salts remobilisation. It was therefore hypothesised that the retention mechanism is predominantly due to chemical bonding rather than physical encapsulation. This discovery will enable researchers to enhance desired paste properties and minimise environmental footprint.
