The monitoring system for the evapotranspiration (ET) landfill cover trial plot is required as part of the proposal to construct an alternative landfill cover for the existing Morwell landfill. The paper deals with the design of an effective and economical monitoring system capable of meeting all Environmental Protection Authority's requirements of the trial. The study mainly focused on the detailed design for construction and analysis of this field trial plot, limited to design and evaluation of the instrumentation and monitoring systems.rnConventional landfill covers are moisture barriers, as they're designed with materials that prevent/ moisture from infiltrating into and percolating through landfills. However, alternative covers, such as evapotranspiration covers, perform differently from traditional covers in keeping moisture from reaching waste stored in landfills. A key deliverable of the overall ET cover field trial is selection of appropriate soil water monitoring equipment and systems which are able to track rainfall and rainfall intensity, and the relationship between these climatic factors and the development of soil moisture fronts through the ET cover profile, and deep percolation.rnThe conclusions cover all elements of the monitoring system design including; identification of required data, resolution, and frequency, identification of available instrumentation, evaluation of alternative options, determine preferred instrumentation, and detail layout design.
