The components of electric arc furnaces (EAF) dust, produced from steelmaking industry, include inorganic pollutant such as heavy metals which usually lead EAF dust classified as industrial hazardous waste. The objective of this research was to use chelating agent solutions to wash specific heavy metals which will interfere with the recovery of zinc oxide. In addition, the efficiency of supercritical fluid (CO_2) extraction to remove specific heavy metals from EAF dust was evaluated. In order to enhance the removal efficiency of heavy metals, three chelating agent solutions were introduced to the supercritical fluid extraction system. Also, hydrogen peroxide was added in order to increase the oxidation reduction potential in EAF dust and to enhance the solubility of heavy metal in chelating agents or supercritical fluid, which consequently increased the removal efficiency of specific heavy metals from EAF dust. Three EAF dusts, with alkaline, neutral and acidic in terms of pH value, were selected as subjects in this study. In the study of batch washing by chelating agents, the results showed the method of using EDTA chelating agent pretreated by adding 0.14% H_2O_2 was the optimal condition. However, the results of supercritical fluid extraction suggested that the optimal operation condition for alkaline and neutral EAF dusts was to use EDTA chelating agent with pretreatment of 0.14% H_2O_2 which extraction efficiency of heavy metals was more than 40% in one batch extraction, the data also indicated the extraction efficiency was increased about 10~20% when chelating agents were introduced in. However, the chelating agents and H_2O_2 pretreatment did not enhance the extraction efficiency for condition of acidic dust.
