Bioleaching of Heavy Metals from Aerobic and Anaerobic Sewage Sludges

The removal of heavy metals from sewage sludge is an important aspect of sludge management. The potential application of microorganisms in leaching of metals from the sludge is gaining importance in recent years. In the present study, bioleaching of heavy metals from aerobic and anaerobic sewage sludges was examined using indigenous iron and sulfur oxidizing microorganisms. Batch experiments were carried out with each sludge in 250 ml Erlenmeyer flask. After 16 days of bioleaching using 10-50 g L~(-1) ferrous sulfate, iron oxidizing microorganisms resulted in the maximum solubilization of 78% Cu, 79% Ni, 87% Zn and 47% Cr from aerobic sludge and 60% Cu, 67% Ni, 77% Zn and 32% Cr from anaerobic sludge. On the other hand, using 10-50 g L~(-1) elemental sulfur, sulfur oxidizing microorganisms resulted in significantly higher metal solubilization of 97% Cu, 93% Ni, 96% Zn and 68% Cr from aerobic sludge and 90% Cu, 90% Ni, 92% Zn and 52% Cr from anaerobic sludge. The results of the present study strongly indicate that sulfur-oxidizing microorganisms were comparatively more efficient in bioleaching of heavy metals from both aerobic and anaerobic sludges.
