We investigated the effect of the amount of discharged waste and landfilled waste, the waste management cost, energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and DD emissions after a change in the domestic waste management system by the Introduction of the biogasification of charged kitchen waste in three municipalities in Japan, using an interview survey. Cities A and B changed the domestic waste management system in which most waste was directly landfilled to the new domestic waste management system. City C changed their system in which combustible waste was incinerated by a small-scale incinerator and most other waste was directly landfilled to the same new system. In the new domestic waste management system, all wastes are charged, kitchen waste is biogasified, combustible waste is incinerated by a large-scale incinerator, and recyclable waste such as bottles, cans, PET bottles, etc., and other waste is landfilled.rnIn three municipalities in Japan, the amounts of the discharged waste and landfilled waste have decreased, while the waste management costs and the energy consumption have increased. In cities A and B, however, the amount of greenhouse gas emission from a biogasification plant and an incineration plant has increased, while the total amount of greenhouse gas emission has decreased as a result of a significant reduction in the methane emitted from the final disposal site. In city C, the amount of greenhouse gas emission has also increased, while the amount of PCDD emissions has dramatically decreased.
