This is a technical note reporting results of the float system propagation method applied to giant reed.rnGiant reed is a high-yielding energy crop in Mediterranean environments, but the major constraint for its diffusion isrnthe high cost of the propagation. The float system method has been traditionally used for tobacco transplantrnproduction. We used this hydroponic system under greenhouse. The greenhouse was not conditioned, only ventilationrnfrom two sides was allowed. No fertilizers nor chemical were applied during the rooting period of secondary culms.rnThe pruning of desiccated original culms and leaves and the maintenance of constant level of water are the only carernrequired during the rooting period. We here show encouraging results obtained for giant reed transplant production.rnUnder the condition of our experiment the rate of survival for secondary culms was 90 per cent, and vigorouslyrnrooted plants were obtained. Two alternatives are available for transplant: i) after about 2-3 weeks the plantlets canrnare ready for transplantation if irrigation is available; ii) the transplant can be postponed to the beginning of Octoberrnif irrigation water is not available
