The result of any measurement is a number expressed either as a ratio, or in physical units, which can never be assumed to be strictly correct. It should always be accompanied by a statement of uncertainty. Examples of the need for statements of uncertainty in colour measurement are given. These include multimedia systems incorporating colours realised on both visual display units and printed surfaces. The derivation of colorimetric uncertainties from first principles is described and the use of calibrated colour standards which greatly simplifies the evaluation of uncertainties in industrial laboratories is given. Some components of uncertainty can be reduced by the determination and correction of errors. Examples of this are presented for some common types of instrumental errors. Current limitations on the process of reducing uncertainties are described and suggestions offered as to how these might be overcome in the future.
