摘要

The purpose of this study is to examine color identification under wide range of illuminances from photopic to mesopic level. Color identification was carried out by naming a color sample by one of the color terms: red, orange, yellow, yellow-green, green, blue-green, blue, purple, pink, brown, white, gray, and black. The experiment was done at the illuminances of 1000, 10, 1 and 0.1 Ix. It was shown that the colors were successfully identified using 13 color terms in 1000 Ix. Identification of the colors at 10 Ix showed similar tendency as in 1000 Ix. Large changes in identification have occurred at 1 Ix. Moreover, reliable color identification seems to be quite difficult at 0.1 Ix. At lower illuminances "pink" was confused with "orange", and "green" was replaced with "blue", while the borders between "yellow" and "yellow-green", "blue" and "purple" are almost constant. These finding would contribute to the appropriate use of color information at wide range of illuminance. Also they might provide useful data for the studies in the field of color vision.
