Estimation of the rice-planted acreage is divided into two processes, 1)rndiscrimination of rice-planted fields and totalization of the acreage discriminated as thernrice-planted. Satellite radar remote sensing is effective for discriminating rice-planted fields,rnbecause the growing season of rice overlaps with the rainy season in Japan. Furthermore, thernrice-planted acreage can be accurately totalized by referring to farmland outline vector data. Inrnorder to improve the estimation accuracy of the rice-planted acreage, a method whichrndiscriminates the rice-planted acreage using satellite radar data and totalizes the rice-plantedrnacreage referring to farmland outline vector data was proposed in this paper. The proposedrnmethod was applied to RADARSAT data to estimate the rice-planted acreage for a test site inrnKoshiji town, Niigata, Japan. The estimated rice-planted acreage obtained by the above methodrnwas compared with that acquired by QuickBird data. As a result of accuracy verification byrnabove comparison, the accuracy of estimation was 85 %.
