It is well-known that the film shape in ealstohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) of point contacts has a flat plateau bounded by a horseshoe shaped constriction. The author and his co-workers have, however, observed under sliding conditions in point contact EHL that a deep conical depression (dimple) is produced in place of the flat plateau. The present EHL theory cannot explain why such a dimple occurs. In this paper, some of necessary conditions for the dimple formation have been discussed. It has also been shown that there exists slip at the wall in EHL contacts even if the oil behaves as a Newtonian fluid. On the basis of these important findings, it has been asserted that the establishment of a new EHL theory is needed to understand the EHL problems deeply and to improve the working performance and durability of machine elements.
