Historically, the printing and publishing industries relied on proprietary technologies and craftsmanship to achieve quality and productivity. In order to stay competitive in the market place, many companies are adopting quality management principles, as exemplified by ISO 9000. Understanding process capability and implementing statistical process control become strategic directions for many of these companies. Conducting a press run analysis is an important first step in the quality improvement process. It requires careful planning, knowledge of the process, and teamwork. The goal of analyzing a press run is to answer questions regarding process quality in the pressroom; for example, are printed products free from defects; if inking coverage is uniform across the sheet; if the press run conforms to specifications; if the press run is stable over time. If all of the answers are positive, then the analysis helps validate the process quality. In addition, an ICC press profile can be constructed for color management practices. This paper describes a methodology for press run planning, press sheet sampling, and implementation of subsequent color measurements and analyses.
