The aim of this study was to develop and to test methodologies for monitoring and harvest of forecast for maize and soybean crops, in Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, using meteorological data, remote sensing and GIS techniques. The study was carried out during 1998/99, in a study area within a complete LANDSAT-5 scene, in the most important grain producing region of the State. Meteorological data were collected with a network of standard meteorological weather stations. The evolution of biomass was monitored through weekly NDVI images, from the NOAA-14 satellite. The yield estimation was made through agrometeorological models, in which the independent term is the relative water consumption calculated through the water balance. The cultivated area was estimated by the classification of the LANDSAT images taken in two different dates along the growth season. Data were integrated in a geographical information system to estimate the final crop production
