There is an increasing need of large-scale monitoring of various ecosystems to support a proper management in the challenging efforts to reach a sustainable global development. Instruments for remote sensing play a crucial part to achieve this goal and realization of new sensor suites for this purpose is an area of intense research. In forested regions biomass retrieval is one of the key parameters, which globally is inaccessible using microwave SAR techniques due to the signal saturation problem from denser forests. Analyses based on data collected by the airborne low frequency SAR CARABAS-II (20-90 MHz) show, however, a radar response which increases linearly with biomass without saturation even for the highest examined value of 375 tons/ha. Furthermore, investigations of the stem volume estimation accuracy in coniferous boreal forests indicate that this kind of data can be an important source in forestry management planning.
