The East Australian Current is one of the most variable current regions on the Earth and the current off southeast Australian is often described as a series of mesoscale eddies. Conventional oceanographic methods of measuring ocean currents make it difficult to resolve the horizontal changes associated with this current. In this study infrared satellite images and satellite altimeter data are used to resolve the time-space variations characteristic of this current region. The maximum cross correlation (MCC) method is used to compute currents from the sequential satellite images, which are then compared with coincident altimeter currents.
