This study compares several image processing techniques (ie. visual interpretation, normalised difference vegetation index, unsupervised classification, supervised classification, principal component analysis and band ratios) applied to Landsat Thematic Mapper, SPOT multispectral and Synthetic Aperture Radar (ERS-1) to extract mangrove forest information. The study provides recommendations regarding the selection of a single sensor approach and sensor combination that fulfills a minimum requirement for practical mangrove mapping and inventory purposes (eg. discriminating mangrove from non-mangrove areas). The Landsat TM was identified as the most accurate sensor for extracting mangrove from non-mangroves using the supervised classification method (ie. the maximum likelihood and minimum distance decision rule) in the estuary. Stages and species of mangroves were distinguished through a combined use of Landsat TM and SAR ERS-1.
