The NOAA/NASA AVHRR Ocean Pathfinder SST database (monthly means/ 9km resolution) is used to investigate the spatial dynamics of the Benguela coastal upwelling ecosystem between 10鳶 and 36鳶. A monthly surface climatology is derived from the SST data available from 1985 to 1998. It is used to identify permanent spatial features, as well as differences in the structure of the upwelling within the region. A transformation of the data is performed to allow comparison of the upwelling process over the whole Benguela latitudinal range. A methodology is developed to derive indices from the SST data, characterising both the spatial structure and upwelling intensity. These indices are used to explore the spatial structure of the upwelling and the differences between northern and southern Benguela coastal upwelling.
