Satellite data enables timeous and relatively cheap means to assessing crop conditions and size(tons). It can be integrated with agro-meteorological models to enable accurate crop yield predictions. The relationship between NOAA AVHRR data and sugarcane yield has been investigated. The NOAA satellite (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of the USA) allows generation of daily georeferenced maps using Advanced Very High-Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) images. The objectives of the project was to evaluate NOAA AVHRR satellite data for macro-scale cane yield estimation, to compare the spectral response of sugarcane, as measured by the satellite over the last 10 years at various times of the year and a yield predicting model with recorded crop production figures. Regression results indicate good correlations between NDVI and actual yield data in irrigated areas, while NDVI of rainfed areas correlate better with model yield values.
