摘要

Knowledge of biological diversity, from genes to landscapes and their function in ecosystems, is fundamental to the well being of society. Networked environmental information can provide speedy answers to scientific queries, and broaden the universe of possible questions on the conservation and sustainable utilization of biological diversity. The South African Integrated Spatial Information System (SA-ISIS) is being developed as an integrated project allowing for an electronic portal to biological and environmental data maintained by academia; museums; national, provincial and local government agencies. The project is a first step in supporting South Africa's obligations to the Convention on Biological Diversity, as well as environmental management regulations. BioMAP [SA], as a sub-component of SA-ISIS, is spearheading efforts to make new types of analytical tools and capabilities available through the World Wide Web that will help users work with environmental data in unparalleled ease and efficiency.
