Spectral characterisation of lignite open cast residual lakes in Central Germany

Remote sensing techniques are an efficient tool for detecting and monitoring of inland water quality parameters. Compared with this experiences of applied remote sensing for acid lakes are very few. The paper will show the use of remote sensing for classification of residual lakes in lignite open cast mines, which are heavily influenced by acid mine drainage. The classification of Landsat-TM5 data with the Minimum -Distance algorithm and added parallelepiped limits proved the best results. The seven determined spectral classes could be described with the analyzed hydrochemical data. Moreover the residual lakes could be divided into three stages of developing of acid lakes. Additionally the paper show the significant differences in the optical properties of acid lakes and natural lakes determined by absorption of dissolved matter and suspended matter. There exist a large potential of using remote sensing methods for assessment and monitoring of residual lakes.
