摘要

Madagascar is Africa's most important biodiversity priority, and among the world's top five countries for species diversity and endemism. Yet pervasive poverty, high population growth, and extensive agricultural practices have led a frontal assault on these unique ecosystems. This paper focuses upon the littoral forests of coastal South Eastern Madagascar, recognized as both biologically unique and extremely limited in extent. Independent studies have demonstrated that these forests are rapidly deteriorating due to pressure from the local people who use the wood for fuel and building materials and who clear parts of the forest for agriculture. It is generally accepted that the remaining littoral forest fragments will be essentially destroyed within the next 2 or 3 decades unless an effective protection strategy is defined to promote biodiversity conservation. Multi-temporal remote sensing is an ideal data source for a regional-scale analysis of forest extent and degradation rate in support of this aim.
