It has been argued that although satellite remote sensing has provided very useful data, it was not always possible to convert this into commercially viable information, especially when compared to more traditional surveying and data gathering technologies. This was typically the result of a combination of relatively high data costs, data unsuitability and lack of (potential) end-user understanding. Recent experience within the CSIR has shown that this is no longer the case. With carefully developed, market-orientated, value-added products, and innovative value-based pricing, it is now possible to generate commercially viable, strategically important spatial data for both public and private sector use. This is primarily due to the ongoing development of both global remote sensing technologies, and the exponential development of the southern African GIS community (and the associated demand for spatial information). One of the cornerstones to the development of the remote sensing product market has been to ensure both the suitability and appropriateness (i.e.' fit for use' ), of satellite data to a clients specific information requirements. By careful understanding of a clients information needs, it is now possible to produce cost-effective spatial data from satellite imagery that addresses real-world problems.
