An Uplink Synchronization Method for GEO Mobile Satellite Communications with TD-SCDMA Frame Structure

It is difficult to adopt TD-SCDMA air interface directly into GEO satellite communications system, mainly due to large propagation delay, as well as large delay differentials. However, for the purpose of well integrating satellite system with terrestrial mobile networks, a novel uplink synchronization method is proposed in this paper in order to introduce the TD-SCDMA frame structure into GEO mobile satellite communications. This so-called delay-differential oriented uplink synchronization method decides the available uplink time-slots according to the delay differential of each user terminal individually, which gets rid of the requirement of keeping adequate common uplink guard time as in the usual method. The principle of cross-assigning time slots and fomulation of the beginning of uplink signal from user terminal are also introduced. Finally, the average available uplink data rate is numerically analyzed respectively in this paper. It is verified that TD-SCDMA frame structure can be adopted for the GEO mobile satellite communications with an acceptable average uplink data rate when applying the proposed uplink synchronization method.
