Development of X-band Multi-Mode High-Speed Modulator for Earth Observation Satellites

X-band Multi-mode High-speed Modulator (XMOD) for earth observation satellites has been developed. The XMOD has 16 Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (16QAM) and Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) modulation modes and achieves the transmission speed of 800 Mbit/s when 16QAM mode is selected. The engineering model of XMOD achieved the excellent bit error rate (BER) performance, light weight and compact size. Its first flight model will be installed on Advanced Land Observing Satellite-2 (ALOS-2) to be launched in 2013. This paper describes the XMOD design overview, key technologies, and the development test results of the engineering model.
