摘要

This paper covers the basic aspects of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), from speech coding and real-time streaming to the recently emerged VoIP standards. The main purpose of speech coding is to deliver good speech quality while maintaining a low bit rate, which is mandatory in a data network with bandwidth limitations that carries voice and data traffic, possibly even video transmissions. Data networks are also characterized by packet loss and packet delays thus some algorithms are needed in order to compensate for these impairments. The paper also covers real-time delivery protocols. Because of their advantages, in the last few years VoIP applications evolved to VoIP communication networks. Consequently VoIP is beginning to evolve as an independent industry. In order to manage wide VoIP networks and interconnect users, a few standards and protocols were developed. Each protocol specifies network architecture and aspects of the communication process (possibly not all aspects). The main purpose of a Voice over IP protocol is to establish sessions between users and allow the integration of value-added services. Another goal is the interconnection with standard telephony networks as well as with networks based on different protocols.
