For intensive development of hydropower potential in the south Asian countries construction of the high head hydropower stations with peaking capacity is must. Spillway structures of such hydropower stations are forced to function in hydraidically heavy conditions with flow velocities of 40 to 50 m/sec and more. The irregularities appearing in the process of construction technology, with high flow velocities, seem to be the sources of occurring cavitation and cavitation erosion on the surface of spillway structures. The bell-mouths of the pressure spillways of 'Vratsky', 'Voljhsky' hydropower stations of Russia and 'Madden' hydropower station of USA experienced cavitation erosion with flow velocity of more than 25 m/sec. Various cases of erosion due to cavitation exist in practice of exploitation of the spillway structures which is oftenly not allowed taking into account that their inspection and maintenance are very difficult and practically not possible, if the special expensive measures are not considered. Therefore, some cavitation erosion characteristics for the bell-mouths of pressure spillway structures are presented herein for their rational hydraulic design of the high head hydropower stations.
