This paper describes the issues of siltation in the Cameron Highlands - Batang Padang Hydro Electric Schemes which are located in Peninsula, Malaysia. There are 17 turbines with units capacities ranging from 300 kW to 50 MW which altogether totalled 261.9 MW and these are connected to Malaysian Grid System. Heavy sediment flow is encountered in nearly all the rivers in the Cameron Highlands catchment area which eventually found its way into the Ringlet reservoir that functions as a giant silt trap. At present it is estimated that more than 70% of the lake capacity of 6.4 million cubic metres is filled with silt/sediment. Operating in cascading system, the effects of the siltation especially in upper scheme eventually affect all the plants in the CHBP Hydro Electric Scheme. Other than higher operating cost, lower plant availability due to frequent shutdown for maintenance and reduced capability as peaking power plant, the other major concern is the effect of spilling on the population situated immediately downstream of Ringlet reservoir. At present other than the review of maintenance procedures, maintenance schedule and operation parameter due to siltation, work on rehabilitation and modernization of the whole scheme including the urgent restoration of the active storage of the reservoir through effective dredging is planned in the near future.
