"The role of turbine sealing in reducing the adverse and harmful affects associated with the flow of unregulated "leakage water" into turbine top cover is very well known to the designers/manufacturers and users of the hydraulic turbines. The design of the turbine sealing suitable for excessive silty water containing substantial quantities of quartz (a known hard material) presents unique and challenging problems to the designers in their endeavor to produce an effective silt friendly design. Incidentally, the above was not envisaged for Francis type vertical turbines of 6 x 115 MW Salal project and results are therefor all to see. It has been observed that turbine seals fail a number of times during the monsoon periods, sometimes within a few hours of installation. Ineffectiveness of the existing repair seal compounded the problems and discouraged the operating engineers from repeated and time consuming process of main seal replacements necessitating the requirement of modified and effective repair and maintenance seal. Thus the concept of "additional repair seal" for turbines of Salal project was born. Engineers at Salal project converted the above challenge into an opportunity for development and initially conceived a novel idea and then successfully designed, developed, fabricated and erected an additional repair seal in one turbine for in-situ testing within a very short period. After successful testing, the additional repair seals have been installed in the turbines of the six generating units. Moreover, the total work was completed at site without any outside help and all the additional repair seals are presently under use bringing substantial benefits to the project in terms of higher machine availability and increased energy generation etc."
