The liquids flow in the hearth of the blast furnace plays a key role regarding the refractory wear of the hearth and then the life time of the blast furnace. 3 D fluid flow calculations were carried out to analyse the effect of the hearth permeability and homogeneity on the flow pattern of the liquids. The results are compared with industrial measurements and studies involving the analysis of the variations of the hearth temperatures and the determination of residence time distribution of metal in the hearth, using radioactive tracers technique.
