The finite element method has been used to model the solid flow inside a cold blast furnace. The constitutive equation used, which belongs to the hypo-plastic family, has been programmed within ABAQUS, the well-known finite element software. This equation has been calibrated using results from simple triaxial tests with sinter and coke material. After several remeshings, the steady state velocity and stress fields were obtained. The outputs showed, amongst other results, the dead-man shape (obtained after calculation) as an iso-velocity curve, the regions of active and passive state, the transition between plug flow and funnel flow, and the void ratio field.
