This paper discusses one of the major error sources in the confocal scanning microscopy. In this paper, the laser drift effect on the three-dimensional surface imaging is demonstrated using the simulation. It is shown that the brightness drift of the laser can cause inaccurate surface geometry information. In addition, this paper discusses a two longitudinal focal points technique (the stereo focus technique). This study demonstrates that the stereo focus technique is more laser drift insensitive than conventional single detector techniques. The paper also shows that the stereo focus technique can improve the optical sectioning strength in the confocal microscope.
