PCC porous concrete is a polymer modified cement concrete used as top layer on highway roads. Due to the large accessible porosity, porous concrete has good drainage properties and noise reducing capacities. The properties of porous concrete are mainly depending on the porosity (20 to 25 %), on the continuous polymer-cement co-matrix and on the adhesion between aggregate and mortar. A test program is set up to reveal the influence of polymer addition (variation of polymer-cement ratio) at different types of curing on the strength and durability of porous concrete. Therefore the properties of the bulk mortar as well as the adhesion strength between mortar and aggregate are determined with adapted test methods. This paper discusses the results of the tests and reveals the influence of the polymer-cement ratio and of the curing method on the properties of the mortar and of the aggregate-mortar composite. The results indicate that the flexural strength of the mortar as well as the adhesion strength between the mortar and the aggregate increase with increasing polymer-cement ratio. The compressive strength of the mortar is less influenced, although a retarding effect on cement hydration is notified. To explain the results, the mechanism of the film formation and the combined structure polymer film-cement hydrate are examined.
