The use of cementitios rendering materials for concrete structures is a common practice in the local building industry. The concrete-block walls are usually coated by a single or double layer of the cementitous mixture in order to seal the wall, to give it a smoother texture and to form a proper substrate for paint or polymeric coating. To improve the adhesion of the stucco layer to the subtrate and avoid detachment and delamination failures, a polymer component is usually added to the mixture, and a polymer primer layer is used as a bond promoter. It was the purpose of this work to study the effect of these additives on the adhesion of the rendering to the substrate. Various polymer-cement compositions were, hence, applied on concrete substrates with and without a primer layer and the adhesion-strength was measured by the pull-off test. In addition to these variables the effect of the curing conditions on the adhesion was also investigated. The main results suggest that: 1. In general, the polymeric additive substantially improves the adhesion strength of the rendering layer to the substrate. Thus for example, the pull-off strength of a mixture which does not contain any polymer is about 1-1.2 MPa, whereas that of a mixture containing 10% polymer is more than double. Furthermore, the pull-off failure does not occurs in the interface but rather within one of the adherents suggesting that the real adhesion strength is even higher. 2. When a polymeric primer is applied on the concrete substrate, forming a polymeric film on the surface, the adhesion strength of a pure cementitious mixture increases from 1.2 MPa to 2.3 MPa suggesting that the polymer layer is a good binding layer. 3. The curing, too, has an important effect on the adhesion quality and strength of the polymer containing mixture to the concrete. A system which was not cured at all by proper wetting developed only poor adhesion (about 0.5 MPa). It seems that the cement hydration has an important roll in the adhesion phenomenon even when polymer materials promote the adhesion.
