Shrinkage reducing agents (SRA) have been used in cement-based materials to combat shrinkage for several years. Comparing with mixing with SRA, which may cause a negative effect on strength development of materials, coating with SRA is deserved to be studied as a useful approach. This study investigates shrinkage, cracking resistance, mechanical properties and microstructure of cement-based materials coated with SRA. The results indicated that the higher the concentration of SRA was coated, the larger the shrinkage reduction ratio was obtained. The optimal concentration is 50%, moreover, different methods of coating has no influence on shrinkage reducing effect. Furthermore, cracking resistance of mortar was improved and cracking area was reduced by 35%, both of flexural and compressive strengths of mortar were increased after being coated with SRA. The results also indicated that more C-S-H gel and ettringite were formed in cement pastes coated with SRA, compared with the control sample.
