Functional networks are a general framework that appears as an alternative to neural networks for solving a wide range of engineering problems. The main purpose of this paper is to introduce functional networks to the readers and to show their power and usefulness in engineering. We describe the steps involved in working with functional networks including the selection of the initial network structure, its simplification using functional equations, some parametric learning methods, and the model selection procedures, together with the network validation. The concepts and methodologies are illustrated using several examples of applications.
