Quality Assessment of Medical Softcopy Image Display Systems in PACS, New Challenges and Issues

The quality of an image that is displayed on softcopy display (SD) system depends on the qualities of the monitor andrnthe graphics control card as well as the viewing conditions. With the broadening implementation of PACS andrndigitization of modern radiology practice in hospitals, many diagnoses are being made based on images displayed onrnSD devices, and consequently SD quality may affect the accuracy of diagnosis. Unlike the traditional film-on-lightboxrndisplay (the hardcopy display), however, optimal softcopy display system parameters are not well defined, and manyrnissues such as the effect of these parameters on the contrast sensitivity of human observers remain unsettled. This hasrnpresented many new issues and challenges to the quality assessment and control in such a digital environment. In thisrnpresentation, some basics about SD system characteristics are reviewed and relevancy to the quality of images will berndiscussed. Some latest development in monitor technologies will be reviewed. In addition some of the internationalrnstandards that have been or are in development will be introduced.
