A study was done by Fick (2008) to investigate the risk that control system trips may cause during a project's life cycle in the chemical industry in South Africa. During this study a model was developed to minimise the risk caused by control system trips in the different phases of a project. This model was validated by means of various questionnaires and applied to an actual project.rnDuring the development and validation of a detailed CSTMP (Control System Trip Management Plan) a major shortcoming was identified. This shortcoming consisted of lack of knowledge about the FAT and the importance of the FAT (Factory Acceptance Test) during the execution phase of a project, especially from an Engineering Manager's view point.rnThis article will give guidance and help to engineers and engineering managers on the pre-work, execution and follow-up of a FAT for control system trips in the chemical industry. This can also be applicable to all other industries.
