摘要

The aeronautical satellite market has unique technical characteristics, different even from other mobility markets, that need to be addressed in the satellite design to produce efficient, cost effective systems. This paper provides guidance to satellite operators building satellites for the aero market. There are several characteristics of the aero market that set it apart from the maritime market, chief among them being the unique diurnal pattern of global air traffic. Aircraft tend to fly in groups along major long haul flight routes. For example, most aircraft operating between the US and Europe take off mid-day in the US, fly overnight, then turn around mid-day in Europe, and fly back together in a 24 hour cycle. Nearly the entire population of aircraft shift back and forth across the Atlantic together each day. Similar periodic flows occur in other parts of the world. The route-periodic nature of the aero market has substantial implications for mobility beam design, particularly as providers move to both smaller wide beams and multi-spot beam satellites to gain efficiencies. Dividing a region like the North Atlantic or North Pacific into Eastern and Western regions may gain spectral efficiency only to negate it by creating two traffic peaks within each sub-region that are each equal to the total traffic within the greater region - greatly increasing the traffic that the system must handle. This problem gets worse with spot beam systems. This issue can be addressed by shaping wide beams based on the underlying route structures and by arranging the amplifiers in a multi-spot beam system so that the satellite power can follow the groups of traffic. In many cases, relatively small changes in satellite design can have a profound effect on the suitability of a satellite for the aero market. The authors hope that providing more information on the unique characteristics of the aero market will ultimately lead to more efficient and profitable satellites and a more robust broadband aero market.
