This paper describes the development of high power output filters for satellite communications payloads. The design of a UHF output filter performing low loss, very high rejection, high power handling and low inter-modulation (PIM) is presented. Band-pass filter resonators are implemented with dielectrically loaded coaxial re-entrant cavities in vented housing. Low loss polymeric materials are employed for filling critical gaps inside the cavities, offering significant improvements in mass and development costs over existing technologies based on quartz or ceramics. A further significant feature is the avoidance of tuning screws. Advanced design techniques employed to carry out the tuning-less solution, combining circuit models and full wave EM simulations, are described. An overview of measured performances and qualification testing carried out by Thales Alenia Space Italy (TAS-I) is presented.
