In an increasingly competitive marketplace, connector designers must continually search for lower cost, high performance, high reliability conductive spring materials. Alloy 171™ (patent pending) comprises a new family of lean copper-nickel-beryllium alloys offering designers superior property combinations at a lower overall cost than any other commercial copper-beryllium alloy, competitive with other high performance copper alloys.rnRapid product development methods inspired by the principles of Advanced Product Quality Planning and Quality Function Deployment were employed to bring Alloy 171 strip from conception to commercial production in record time. This novel material leverages Brush Wellman's new, on-going capital investment expansion in strip mill capability and capacity, plus the alloy's innovative composition and proprietary processing developments, to significantly lower manufacturing cost. As a result, Alloy 171 can be offered at the lowestrnpricing ever achieved for copper-beryllium alloys in large volume applications. Available mill hardened conditions range from the AT and 1/2HT tempers for automotive terminal applications with severe forming requirements to the 3/4HT and HT tempers for miniaturized telecommunications and computer connectors requiring high strength. The competitive advantages of Alloy 171 include superior strength/formability combinations, plus better electrical and thermal conductivity and stress relaxation resistance compared to other age hardenable copper alloys. These outstanding performance attributes are coupled with superior consistency of mechanical properties.
