The collection and conversion of solar energy does not diminish the amount available. This characteristic classifies solar energy under many meanings of the umbrella terms "renewable energy" or "sustainable energy." One method of collecting and converting solar energy into electricity is to use photovoltaic arrays. Another popular method is wind turbines, especially near coastal waters, but that approach is not pursued in this paper. Five communities, located in the states of Washington, Oregon, California, and Utah have planned, locally financed, and installed photovoltaic arrays and are maintaining those arrays in order to offset the town's expenses for electricity used by local governmental services and individuals. This paper summarizes, by comparison, the approaches taken by these small communities to use electrical energy converted from solar energy. Also summarized are some principles behind the maintenance, operation, and performance monitoring of photovoltaic arrays.
