An electromagnetic railgun is explored for use as a ballistic testing launcher in a laboratory setting. Railguns offer the experimenter both high velocities and the ability to fire many types of projectiles, all while maintaining a low per-shot cost and reduced waste per-shot. The team that worked on this project consisted of undergraduates from four different disciplines. We took a systems engineering approach to evaluate and begin the design of a working railgun at the United States Military Academy. We successfully completed the first phase of the project: developing safety protocols, securing a location, building a catch tank, and establishing relationships between West Point and experts at multiple railgun facilities. Systems thinking helped the team members learn about applying their respective disciplines, working with a client, and collaborating with each other and experts in the field.
