The effectiveness of large format reflective colour CHLC displays has been demonstrated for outdoor display applications. However, the optical qualities of the medium combined with unpredictable viewing environments pose a challenge to using mainstream ICCbased colour management solutions. The optical qualities of the CHLC and the difficulties they pose for metrology are discussed culminating in the recommendation of a diffuse normal (d:0o) measurement geometry (non-standard for graphic arts). A test-device is measured and an accurate characterization model developed using a polynomial regression method. The gamut shape of the CHLC medium is found to exhibit surface concavities, and a modified convex hull method is used to establish its gamut boundary descriptor before using a carefully selected gamut clipping algorithm to populate the ICC media relative rendering intent of a CLUT-based profile. Challenges to the CHLC’s ICC profile usage are discussed, including the lack of a standard viewing condition for outdoor displays and the issue of incomplete viewer adaptation. Expectations of the end-user are hard to manage, especially if clients intend to use the resulting colour profile with their existing desktop software. Usability issues relate to the different ICC profile formats MatrixTRC or CLUT). An alternative strategy of producing a ‘CHLC reference RGB colourspace’ is explored, and how it might be used within the limitations of mainstream soft-proofing tools for previewing an RGB output device.
